Mechanism
Activates guanylate cyclase-C receptors on intestinal cells, raising cGMP that opens CFTR channels to boost chloride and bicarbonate secretion and draw water into the gut, softening stool; works best in the acidic upper small intestine.

Diarrhea is the most common side effect, around 4%; generally well tolerated; rare risk of serious dehydration in children under 6, in whom it's contraindicated.
