Mechanism
Calcium-dependently inserts into bacterial membranes, binding phosphatidylglycerol to trigger depolarization and potassium efflux; pore/channel formation causes cellular leakage and death without targeting cell-wall or protein synthesis.
Safety file
Muscle toxicity (myopathy, rhabdomyolysis) is the main risk, requiring weekly CPK checks; rare eosinophilic pneumonia and peripheral neuropathy with long-term use are also reported.
